The route includes the small Karoo towns of Matjiesfontein, Sutherland, Fraserburg, Williston, Carnarvon, Loxton, Victoria West and Beaufort West and is also commonly referred to as the Great Karoo. Sheep farming is the economic backbone of the Karoo and Karoo lamb has become the flagship export of the region.
