Elegance Guesthouse

Elegance Guesthouse was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Süllwald and their family. Mr. Süllwald, a German immigrant, built the house himself between 1981-1983. He came to South Africa as a 16 year old boy with his father and older brother. They had no money, debt of 100 pounds, and could not speak a word of any of South Africa’s languages.
Mr. Süllwald was a building contractor and built some prominent buildings in Phalaborwa as well as a good number of houses. After his passing in 1994, his daughter Yolinda converted the house into a guesthouse.

The guesthouse has 15 double rooms, all complete with en-suite bathrooms and double or two three-quarter beds. The house has five formal lounges, a television room, dining room, games room, complete with full-size snooker table, and a service lift. The house also boasts an extensive collection of South African art and Persian carpets. The gardens, scattered with cycads and prolific birdlife, also have a swimming pool and outside lapa.
