Eskort Limited Factory Shop

In mid-1917 a group of nine people gathered in Estcourt to discuss the establishment of a bacon curing factory in the area. By August 1917 the Farmers’ Co-operative Bacon Factory Limited was founded and building commenced on the banks of the Bushman’s River in Estcourt.

The factory was officially opened on June 6, 1918 by General Louis Botha. Mr Thrupps of Johannesburg became one of the co-operative’s first large clients.

In June 1919 the SS Saxon carried the first bacon exports to the United Kingdom, which were well received. The company secured a number of awards at the 1920 Rand Easter Show in Johannesburg. In the same year the manufacture of the now famous Eskort Gold Medal Pork Sausages commenced and the co-operative’s continued marketing of excellent products was rewarded with the third successive win in the export hams and bacon categories at the 1922 Rand Easter Show.

Tragedy struck in 1925 when a fire caused extensive damage to the factory and production was temporarily relocated to Nel’s Rust Dairy Limited in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Despite the setback the company won the top three prizes at the 1926 London Dairy Show.

During World War Two over 1-million tins of sausages were supplied to the Allied Forces all over the world. Over 12 tonnes of bacon per week were supplied to convoys calling at Durban harbour.

Early in 1948 plans for a factory in Heidelberg, Gauteng, were drawn up and the factory commenced production in September 1954. The retail Eskort butchery, a favourite shopping stop for travellers between the Reef and Durban, was opened in 1951.

During the 1950s the company embarked on a concerted effort to improve the class of pig being received into the factory and this work, and the purchase of breeding stock, played a major role in the development of reliable, quality raw material. The first vacuum-packed, sliced bacon in South Africa was made available in 1959.

The Golden Jubilee Year of 1967 was celebrated with plans for additional expansion at both Estcourt and Heidelberg, which was continued vigorously to make Eskort the single largest brand in the South African processed meat industry. Eskort products are distributed nationally through 26 distribution centres, which are then shipped to the many retail and wholesale outlets available.

The Eskort range of products now extends to over 100 lines and includes bacon, sausages, viennas, polonies, ham, and cold meat loaves.

Since 2000, the Eskort product portfolio has been extended into the fresh pork market with products such as spare ribs, bacon cherry sticks, marinated rashers and smoked eisbein being marketed at the Eskort butcheries in Heidelberg and Estcourt.

Eskort is actively involved in social projects in local communities. The company supports the Shalom Children’s Ministries in Heidelberg and Estcourt and the Bhekuzulu Self Sufficient Project, which cares for people with HIV, orphans and displaced children in the Estcourt community. Eskort is also the proud sponsor of the Eskort Cavanaugh Marathon.

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>

Fort Durnford is a museum with many interesting displays including fossils, Iron Age and Stone Age items, old wagons and models showing where many of the battles in the area took place. They also showcase one of the biggest collections of bird eggs.

Fort Durnford was constructed as a frontier post after an alarm caused by the Langalibalele Rebellion of 1873. Strategically placed on an eminence above the old military post at the drift, with an extensive outlook to all quarters, the fort is a substantial rectangular structure of local sandstone, with walls 0.6m (2ft) thick rising to probably 9m (30ft). There are two square towers – one to the south-east and one to the north-west. There are heavily barred windows throughout and numerous loopholes. The windows were originally fitted with heavy iron shutters turning on hinges spiked to the walls for closure when not manned. Today it is an old colonial defence point of considerable historical interest.

Inside the building a stone-paved hall gives entry to the body of the fort with guard-, barrack-, court- and storerooms. Off a side passage, originally closed by a grille and probably used for prisoners, there are doors to a vaulted powder-magazine and offices.

Today the fort is home to the Estcourt Museum and what was once a bastion against the Zulu is now a seat of cultural interest.

Other items of interest include an underground tank beneath the floor of one of the rooms and, in the ground floor of the north-west tower, the remains of a pit from which two secret tunnels allegedly led. One led north-west towards the military post at the drift and the other north-east exiting from the hillside, useful for bringing in supplies or providing a means of escape.

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>

KwaZulu Weavers

The KwaZulu Weavers factory was established some 15 years ago, bringing together generations of experience in weaving. KwaZulu Weavers rugs are woven by master weavers who have through generations handed down the fine art of African weaving and ethnic design. Each step is carefully monitored to ensure the rugs conform to the highest international standard. All rugs are hand woven, using the finest wools available.

What makes the company unique is its process of manufacturing. The weavers receive raw wool in bale form, complete the washing process, mothproof the rugs and handle the various processes of colouring and carding of the wool.

The fibres are then spun for further processing before they are made into your own selected personal rug. Before dispatching, the rug enters the finishing department for completion and quality control.

Producing a KwaZulu Weavers rug is a long and rewarding process, as each fibre is joined, worked and finally spun into threads. This is then hand-woven into a magnificent masterpiece. The designs and colours make the rugs unique.

An objective of the trust remains the creation of sustainable community-based eco-tourism ventures. Local community members who are familiar with the area have been trained as registered tour guides.

The breathtaking scenery, rural grandeur and friendly people in this mountainous region make this an experience not to be missed.

Guides for hire:

Local community members have been trained to guide hikers into the foothills and summit wilderness. Visits to Bushman rock art sites require guides. Overnight summit hikes can be arranged with experienced guides and equipment is also available for hire.

The Mnweni Experience (by arrangement only):

Day one

Arrive at the centre. Enjoy a traditional dinner and entertainment by Zulu dancers.

Day two

Under the African sky visitors can enjoy a campfire and a traditional African meal before turning in to sleep under a thatched roof in a cosy rondavel.

Three Trees Lodge is surrounded by the Drakensberg mountains and overlooks a secluded valley of the Spionkop (Spioenkop) Game Reserve in the lee of the famous Spionkop Hill.

This lodge has been built on a hillside among the striking Aloe spectabilis and the paperbark acacia, with views that inspired a guest to write: “Africa at its finest!” It overlooks the Spionkop Game Reserve, where white rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu and numerous smaller antelope can be seen, perhaps even from your bath!

270 bird species, from Cape vultures and lanner falcons to buff-streaked chats and fairy flycatchers, have been recorded in this area.

The main lounge:

The main living area has an open-plan design with four sets of large double doors leading onto the veranda. The result is a flowing space, where visitors can relax on a comfortable chair, read in the afternoon sun and enjoy convivial dinners. In the winter an open log fire and Dover coal stove create a welcoming atmosphere.

The lodge veranda:

The colonial design with its large verandas creates an ideal environment in which to relax and enjoy nature. Meals are often served outside, where one can soak up the views while enjoying the exquisite local cuisine – a fusion of home and modern flavours.

Accommodation:

The bedrooms are equipped with all the modern conveniences, heated towel rails and 100 percent cotton percale linen adding to you comfort. These luxuries do not detract from the colonial design, but merely enhance your turn-of-the-century South African colonial life experience. The beds are three-quarter twins, but doubles are available on request.

Each room has its own deck, which offers unimpeded views of the valley and Spionkop. If luck is on your side you might see a rhino or giraffe wandering by.

Each of the six twin cottages has its own shower and bath from where one can soak up the atmosphere of Spionkop while gazing out over the valley.

A viewing deck and swimming pool offer complete relaxation in a truly African setting. The pool is situated in a secluded area under a large acacia tree, near the rooms and the main lodge.

Activities:

Battlefield tours: The flagship tour is a full-day outing, beginning with the Battle of Spionkop, then lunch back at the lodge, followed by the Battle of Colenso, plus Churchill’s Capture at Chieveley. This can be done as two half-day tours.

Game-viewing (from Three Trees): The position overlooking the Spionkop Game Reserve affords great game-viewing opportunities, whether it is from your room, on horseback or while out walking on the property. Rhino and giraffe and many varieties of antelope may be spotted grazing near the lodge on the other side of the fence.

Horse-riding: There are numerous opportunities for horse riding at and around Three Trees. Rides on the property provide wonderful views of the Spionkop Battlefield, the game reserve and the Drakensberg mountains. They provide an opportunity to experience the spectacular countryside up close, whether to view the flora and fauna, to gain insights into the difficulties of fighting a war with Victorian impedimenta on this terrain, or to view seldom-visited parts of the battlefield (for example the Boer trenches on nTabanyama/Thaba Nyama).

Walking: There are numerous walks available from the lodge. Whether it’s nature, history, enjoying the fauna and flora or purely exercise, the choice is yours.

Golf: There are a number of golf courses in the Drakensberg, all within an hour’s drive of the lodge, notably the Champagne Sports Resort Golf Course, which is rated among the top 20 courses in the country.

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>

It was officially opened in 1993 by Sheila Henderson and is certainly worth a visit.

This is a community museum and represents living history, telling a story of the people in the area – past and present. Everyone is there: the people from the early and late Stone Age, Iron Age, the San, the people who fled from Shaka’s invading armies during the Mfecane, the first white people, the Voortrekkers and early English settlers. Part of the joy of this museum is that you can walk out into the street and meet a descendant of one of the folk whose photographs you saw inside.

Local Ngwane people built huts next to the museum, using materials they collected themselves the way their ancestors did. Farmers in the district donated old farm implements used by their forefathers. Remember the beautiful book on the Drakensberg called Barrier of Spears, by Reg Pearse? Reg’s son Malcolm was commissioned to photograph all the known San rock art in the area. Together with other San artefacts, this exhibit is a huge success.

Carel Hollenbach donated an outstanding private collection of Boer War books to the museum. If you are planning on visiting the battlefields while you are in the area, make use of the reading room to brush up on some facts. Many battlefield guides have used these same books.

Then there is the blacksmith shop, complete with tools and equipment, and the Weston Caravan. Maxmillian John Ludwich Weston designed many electrical and mechanical devices for which he held world patent rights and wrote several books. Assisted by his cousin, he put the first electric lights into the Paris Opera House and became the first man in South Africa to build a powered flying machine.

For the caravan on display he bought a truck chassis, a 1918 model Commerce, and built the caravan onto it. The family toured from Cape Town through Africa and Europe, including Italy, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Greece, before settling in the area in 1933.

The museum is visited by many tourists, tour companies and school groups.

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>

The Zingela Safari and River Co.

Established in 1983, this camp has been lovingly created from the natural materials that occur in the area. From simple beginnings, it has evolved slowly over the years and has stretched the concept of outdoor living to its limits!

Whether you visit Zingela for relaxation or an adventure filled holiday, conference or teambuilding session, the magic beauty of Zingela assures you of a special and memorable stay.

The owners describes the accommodation in their own words:

“We often get asked for a description of the accommodation and have found it easier to say what it is not than what it is!

You will not be staying in a chalet, rondavel or tent. Each en-suite design is unique and has been built in unity with its immediate environment. We have used river stone, reed and canvas as materials.”

“Larney lane is for couples while Hotel and Aloes are more suitable for family groups or friends. The price remains the same for each unit and we book on a first come, first serve basis.

We can comfortably host groups of forty and erect extra tents for larger parties. As an example, Zingela has been the venue for weddings and adventure races where we have catered for seventy guests.

Aptly named, Riverside Camp is within easy walking distance downstream of Zingela camp. The setting and views are unbeatable.

The accommodation consists of four en-suite thatched units built with mud, reed and traditional dung floors. This is ideal for a small group of friends.
Two units have electricity while two are lit by oil lamp.

There is a central simple bush kitchen and our staff is available to service the camp and assist with food preparation if you choose to self-cater. “

Activities:

• White river rafting: Summer is all about white water rafting and Zingela has twice hosted the South African White water rafting championships. There is an excellent 20km stretch of rapids and pools on this section of the Tugela Canyon including the intimidating Washing machine and Finger rock rapids;
• Quads and mountain bikes: Zingela offers a unique quad ride into or out of camp;
• Horse-riding: Those keen on things less man-made can choose to go on the horse trails offered by the neighbouring bush camp;
• Paint ball: The ruins of the old farmhouse make an ideal venue for the game;
• Fly-fishing;
• Abseiling and zip sliding: The cliffs overlooking the Tugela Canyon provide dizzying abseil sites;
• Birding: A variety of species can be seen on this piece of land.

Zingela also caters for special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, etc. They also offer wonderful team building activities for companies. Corporate bookings of 20 or more are regarded as exclusive.

The Nest Hotel from 1855 to today!

The Nest has always been rich in history and adventure. From around the late Iron Age the Bushmen painted eland and other images on the walls of caves - from the Sebaaini Caves to Anton's Shelter - and continued to do so through the early Voortrekker days.

On 21 September 1849 David Grey of Cathkin in Scotland left with his wife and four children on the barque Aliwal for Port Natal (Durban). In 1855 he moved to The Nest on the Voortrekker Farm bought from Opperman, which stretched well into the Drakensberg. It was he who named Cathkin Peak after Cathkin Braes in his native Glasgow.

During the Langalibalele Rebellion in April 1874 rebels rushed into the house and stabbed their sons, David (29) and Walter (15), before David Grey senior fired a shot through the veranda post. The rebels bolted and luckily David and Walter recovered. The homestead on The Nest was however burnt down that night.

On 24 January 1900, close to The Nest in the area known as Spioenkop, a major battle erupted during the Anglo-Boer War - known as The Battle of Spioenkop.

In 1933 Leslie Forbes Gray opened a guesthouse in the re-built farmstead, and in 1943 the present hotel was built by Italian prisoners of war. In 1963 Theodore Haug took over The Nest Hotel and ran it for 16 years. The Malherbe's ran it thereafter for 9 years.

In June 1988 Willi and Veronica Germann acquired The Nest Hotel and the adjacent farm and are delighted to be your hosts in this scenic, beautiful and historic part of KwaZulu-Natal in the very heart of the Drakensberg.

November 2000 saw the formation of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg World Heritage Site. The area was awarded this status by Unesco in recognition of the brilliant natural and cultural excellence which should be preserved for future generations to appreciate.
