They are involved in various hospitality ventures in South Africa as well as elsewhere in Africa. Recently they have acquired a large complex overlooking the old and scenic town of Joubertina on the famous R62 Route. The complex overlooks a valley of orchards with layered mountains each side and is 50km from Kareedouw when travelling towards Oudtshoorn and George.

The kiosk offers take-away or sit-and-stay light meals, and they will serve an English breakfast in the shade of the gazebo, or a packed take-away. The kiosk serves coffee, tea and fruit juice and stock most of what is needed in a car, from wet-wipes to small emergency medicines.

There is also a gift shop that stocks a variety of craft work, dried fruit and nuts, condiments and preserves. It also serves as an information centre and stocks brochures and maps on all the local attractions, which include a variety of guest farms, walking trails and quad bike rides. Quad bike trails can be arranged here.

A traditional farm stall will also be opening in March 2007, which will provide the opportunity for travellers to obtain fresh and good value local fruit, vegetables and flowers. It will offer jams, pickles and sauces, produced in house and locally sourced. A fuller menu will be on offer and the venue will be the ideal place to take a break from a trip, perhaps to plan an excursion to one of the local guest farms or trails.

For those who want to take advantage of the superb local guest houses, there will be a full service restaurant, with an outside deck. There will be a menu offering a wide variety of choices, a sports bar and a wine boutique. The famous Klein Karoo wines will feature, as will the internationally known Boplaas Port.

The Schoemans are experienced in the hospitality industry and will venture to reflect this in the way they run their business.

Gerrie is an off road specialist and guides tours to all points of Africa, as well as locally.

The R62 Langkloof Tourism will be run by South Africans who are proud of their country and who want others to experience all the Eastern Cape has to offer.

Our Native American 18ft Tipi tents provide comfortable accommodation in an earth friendly setting. Each Tipi sleeps 5 persons and has its own picnic table outside with shade provided. Allow yourself to unwind as the water from our nearby stream slows your senses to a rhythmic heartbeat. Let the glow of the fire bring warmth and comfort as you experience the presence of nature. No artificial lighting, no cell phone reception and no hassle. Close to the ground, around a fire, sensing the elements as they stir outside, camping has never been so easy.

Bordering this natural gem, Terra Pi gives visitors the opportunity to participate in ecological restoration projects re-vegetating river courses and rehabilitating post-wattle areas.”

Putting back into the earth:

The clever use of natural rehabilitation methods gives the satisfaction of returning to nature the resources man has taken away through careless practices. While staying at Terra Pi, the earth speaks to us, rewarding us with bountiful natural experiences and a free and joyous heart. Close to nature, in touch with the earth, we walk freely amongst the animals of our land, receiving blessings and good health. Our love grows as we tread carefully upon her skin — as we rest in the wild, surrounded by nature. Experience the elements in the comfort of our camp, and cook on open fires while blessed with peace and tranquility. This is the way it has always been.

To make music like the Old Ones, listening to sounds born from the wild. Let the rhythm and pulse filter through you — like the mountain water you drink. Vibrant and healthy, inwardly clean. You can explore the forests and rivers . . . or relax with a view. It’s all up to you . . .

Our respect for the land reveals its gifts. Sharing with love and nurturing the seed that grows. Healthy and carefree — you will not need a thing. The earth has provided for as long as we’ve been. Come see how we know and learn from within. Our footprint on nature is so light it’s unseen.

Close to the spirit of the land, this place cares for all your needs, and will surprise and delight you with its ingenuity, its care for your personal well-being, and its potential for enjoyment of our wilderness.

Harry and Saskia explain their business:

Kouga Visual Arts

In December 2006 the Kouga Cultural Centre was opened with the purpose of serving as a meeting place for all members of the community. The building was constructed in a sustainable manner, using African building methods of compressed earth, timber poles and thatch from the Kouga Region. The Kouga area in the Eastern Cape includes the coastal towns of Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Oyster Bay and the rural towns of Humansdorp, Hankey, Loerie and Patensie.

Kouga Visual Arts was formed three years ago, with a strong focus on helping the disadvantaged in the community. It consists of a small voluntary committee of local artists and crafters, set up by the Kouga Municipality, with the aim of assisting in the identification of art and craft skills within the area. Consequently, several programmes that fall under the umbrella of Kouga Visual Arts came into being. These programmes offer opportunities to those from the poorer rural areas, many of whom are infected and affected by HIV and Aids and others who have mental disabilities.

Tutors set out to motivate and encourage students to think and design on their own initiative. Drawing skills become important in helping students to visualize the finished products that they make. The focal point is the importance of mixing traditional arts and crafts with a more modern approach, with mixed media reflecting contemporary life in South Africa today.

The Kouga Visual Arts’ Programmes includes:

A ceramic programme in Weston near Hankey;

A fine arts programme in Humansdorp;

A basket weaving programme in Humansdorp – Mazenze basket weaving;

A leather programme in Loerie; and

A bead making programme in Hankey.

These groups are spread out amongst the rural areas, but do have regular exhibitions. Contact them to find out more.

Masenze Basket Weavers:

The word Masenze means ‘coming together’.

Leena and Regina Naap are sisters from Kwa Nomzamo near Humansdorp. They have been making basket ware from traditional materials and with traditional methods since they were children. They kindly agreed to teach others in their community in order to pass on these valuable life skills.
Together with their students, they have formed a group of basket makers, called Masenze.

A Renewable Process:

The basket weaving begins with raw materials called the Imizi grass. This is a special type of grass that grows on the river banks and in permanently damp conditions.
Once the grasses are collected, they are cleaned, dried and stored.

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>

The Crown Eagle nests in the kloof nearby and visitors can often see the eagle soaring over the hills. Game like bushbuck, rheebuck, grey buck, duiker are indigenous to the area, as well as baboons and monkeys.

Visitors can explore the area, go hiking or swim in the river by the kloof.

Tolbos Country Shop

Tolbos is known for its homely hospitality and good old-fashioned value. Local citrus products from surrounding farms are available as well as crafts, pot plants, glassware, jams, cakes, pies, curios and pottery (meticulously crafted by Toska). Widely considered the information centre of the Patensie region and outer perimeters, Toska and Hetsie will gladly give travellers guidance and direct visitors to the pristine places in the surrounding region.

Tolbos can cater for large groups with prior notice.

How did Tolbos begin?

Toska was looking for a place to sell her pottery and Hetsie was looking for a place to do needlework. They then applied for a ‘tuisnywerheids’ license (home industry) with the municipality at the time. The problem with that municipality was that no one that applied for a license had been successful as the mayor was also the general manager of the only shop on the main street of Patensie – there was a monopoly that was unbreakable. After a long wait they received their license, and on it was clearly written that only locally produced goods could be sold from the shop. They were very thankful, and immediately started looking around for premises. It was almost impossible as every existing building on the street belonged to the same organisation. We did manage to get a farmhouse just outside of town behind the rugby club’s pavilion.

But how do you begin a shop?

There must be an opening. At the time Hetsie had an uncle in parliament that she invited and he said he would help officially open the shop two weeks later. Toska and Hetsie sprang to work – painting, putting up burglar bars and tending the garden. Flyers were handed out and the entire community was invited.

So that is how Mr Kobus Meiring, the minister of foreign affairs, opened Tolbos on the 17th of August 1988. They made history as they were the first other business in Patensie. The local people supported them tremendously, but they soon realised that they needed more people to come into the shop if they were to survive. And that is how they began with GAMTOER – they opened an agricultural route that was open every second weekend and people could visit farms, enjoy meals there, have tractor rides …. a real farm experience! But, just like everything, it took time for people to get to know about the route, as Gamtoos was not well known at the time at all. Unfortunately some of the farmers lost interest, and Gamtoer slowly faded away. At Tolbos they started marketing the route as more of an attraction for during the week, and encouraged bus tours to visit the Gamtoos Valley during the week. They took tours to the citrus packing house, tobacco co-operative and farm visits with meals. For this promotion Tolbos was awarded a certificate by SATOUR.

During this time, Toska and Hetsie also realised that Tolbos was too far off the main road and in 1993 they bought a piece of open land from the municipality. It was the best decision made – being on the main street, everyone passes Tolbos as they come through Patensie. They have never tired of marketing the valley. They also decided to concentrate on the Baviaans, as the early nineties was the beginning of the 4x4 mania. At that stage the Baviaans was totally unknown. When they did their first tourism brochure for the Gamtoos Valley and the Baviaans, they contacted everyone on the route to find out whether they had any input. It was great to work together with everyone.

"We also realised that everyone is dependent on each other. Those were years of struggling and growing, but today we’re thankful that we pushed through, endured the criticism, because it’s now going well and we can recommend any places on the route to tourists with confidence. We are very proud to be part of the Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve. We believe that we will always be involved with tourism as it’s in our hearts".

The small house was used as a schoolhouse for years. Many children attended the school, up until about grade nine. There was a school principal, who was often also the only teacher at the school.

Both houses are fully kitted out. Clean linen and towels are also supplied. The main house has two bathrooms, one with a bath and one with a shower. The small house has just one bathroom with a shower. In the main house there is an old fireplace in the kitchen that is a fabulous gathering place in the wintertime. There is also an oil heater. The main house can accommodate eleven people, and the small house seven.

Katrien, the housekeeper (a character that you wouldn’t want to miss) makes sure that everyone arrives to a sparkling clean house. She will also clean the houses during the stay; visitors can arrange this with Katrien and pay her directly. Katrien can also make arrangements for donkey cart rides, and short outings with a local guide to bushman paintings. She can also braai delicious traditional roosterkoek for extra remuneration.
The mountains surrounding the house have wonderful echoes, and there are beautiful ravines with rare ferns within walking distance. The old weeping willow on the grass is the most wonderful social place in the summer, with cool shade under the tree. Meals are also available on request and can be ordered before arrival.

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>

Cedar Guesthouse and Retreat

The Cedar Guesthouse and Retreat is situated on the Matjiesfontein farm. The farm is off the beaten track in the western part of the Baviaanskloof and surrounded by the 80 000 hectares of Kouga Mountain wilderness. A small part of the farm, less than 1%, is used for organic farming, while the rest of the farm has been returned to wilderness status. The farm has abundant wild mountain game including the very rarely seen Leopard. The farm has a network of trails and hikes following mountain rivers and leading to stunning waterfalls and bushmen paintings. The numerous farm roads also provide great opportunities for mountain biking.

Cedar Guesthouse and Retreat have three different accommodation options available on the farm, one of which is a community development project.

Cedar Guesthouse:

Surrounded by the red cliffs of the Baviaanskloof and with a beautiful view down the valley, this guesthouse caters for visitors who like to nurture themselves in comfort and style. The century old house has been beautifully renovated with a slightly earthy touch to provide a tranquil and sheltered refuge against the rugged terrain of the kloof.

The Cedar Guesthouse (sleeps 13 guests) has four double or twin rooms, a single room on the stoep and a teenage bunk room at the back of the house, two luxurious bathrooms, a spacious lounge and kitchen, and a beautiful wraparound veranda. There is also a fabulous outside solar shower under the avocado tree.

There is a braai (barbeque) area outside set in the beautiful indigenous garden as well as a plunge pool.

The Just-For-two cottage:

This beautiful little shepherd’s cottage has been renovated using the natural materials and building methods of the kloof and is set in its own kloof, five minutes away from the main guesthouse, in an olive grove and close to a dam surrounded by towering poplar trees. It is self-catering with a fully equipped kitchen, complete with a wood stove, as well as gas appliances. Having no power, it is provided with paraffin lamps and candles. There is an outside private bathroom so you can lie in the bath or shower at night and watch the moon rise over-head, and a separate loo with a view down the kloof. There is also a braai (barbeque) area outside.

This cottage is perfect if you want a get-away deep in the wilderness with your partner or by yourself.

The Cob Cottage:

Cob Cottage lies in the valley against the cliffs on the far side of the farm. It is tucked away and very private. It has a queen size bedroom, very comfortable lounge and open plan kitchen, which is fully equipped with gas appliances for self-catering guests, and a delightful bathroom, half open to the sky, so you can lie in the bath and watch the eagles and stars overhead.

There is solar power in the cottage for lights or guests can use the paraffin lamps provided. This beautifully crafted cob cottage is part of an empowerment project hosted by the Another Way trust. This cottage was built during their annual Cob Building Workshop in 2008 and had thirteen people contribute love, sweat, tears and blessings. The cottage is built of mud, adobe bricks, strawbales and poplar beams from the farm.

Retreats:

They run and host a range of retreats throughout the year from yoga and meditation retreats to cob building workshops. Please refer to their website for more details – www.baviaan.co.za

Rietrivier Accomodation/Makkedaatgrot

Situated 50km from Willowmore, this is a completely different accommodation experience. This unique accommodation consists of a natural cave that has been enclosed with timber and rock and fitted to sleep ten people.

Facilities include running water, hot shower (heated by a traditional donkey system and built into the mountain rock), flush toilet (with a view!) and a small kitchen fitted with gas stove and sink. A braai (barbeque) place is situated outside the cave and there is also an open boma for those long evenings spent next to a crackling fire with friends and/or family. Paraffin lamps and candles provide light at night and create a relaxed atmosphere.

The accommodation is self catering, and bedding is not supplied. Meals can however be provided on request.
Firewood and braai (barbeque) packs can be purchased at the farm. Please arrange all extras when booking.

The mouth of the cave faces east, resulting in spectacular views of the sunrise and romantic moons. At night the clear Karoo sky offers excellent opportunities for star gazers. Due to the fact that the cave forms part of the mountain, it is cool in the summer but warm during the winter. This makes the Makkedaat Grot/Cave a good choice throughout the year. For the young (and the young at heart) the 'Lions Den' was recently added as a second 'bedroom'. This extension is extremely popular with children.

The farm has numerous overhanging rocks (bakke), which have been cleaned for visitors to camp in. One, Dawid se Bak has been built in the form of a lapa and has a flush toilet and shower (donkey hot water system). There is also a campsite at the Populierbos with bush ablutions - flush toilet, electricity and a shower with water heated by a donkey system. Self-sufficient campers and hikers can overnight at any one of the Bakke on the farm and experience the silence of the Karoo.

Rietrivier also has an interesting collection of fossils. Various species can be seen, some being up to 380 million years old. Visitors are given the opportunity to learn more about marine invertebrate fossils unique to the Karoo. Many people aren’t aware that the entire Baviaanskloof region was once under the sea.

The farm offers a number of clearly marked hiking routes, which lead to some interesting sites, rock formations and fresh mountain fountain water. With some imagination the rock formations can resemble anything, such as the seven dwarfs, a pulpit and even a crocodile! The terrain is mountainous and hikes range from easy in the valleys to strenuous when climbing the mountain. There are also a large number of tracks suitable for mountain biking. After a long day's hiking or cycling, a refreshing swim in the swimming-hole (swemgat) can be enjoyed. Unfortunately it dries up during the dry months.

Animal life in the area ranges from the black eagle (witkruis arend), klipspringer (buck) to the bloukopkoggelmander (type of lizard). The area is full of interesting Karoo flora such as succulents and the rare Willowmore Cedar tree. Outdoor activities include hiking, mountain biking, donkey cart rides, 4x4 tracks with overnight camping sites, bird-watching and mountain climbing.

Horses are available for experienced riders to explore the farm on horseback. Educational hikes where visitors are shown the different types of plants found in the area can be arranged upon request.

The ethos of Sederkloof is the tranquil enjoyment of what the spectacular Baviaanskloof has to offer. To enhance the experience, the complex has been so designed as to create the minimum visual impact upon the environment.

There are six luxury chalets, all totally private. Each chalet has air-conditioning, a mini bar, deck chairs and an outside shower. The communal area has a lounge, bar, pool surrounded by a wooden deck and an African style boma for evening meals under the starlight.

Sederkloof offers a number of guided activities for it's guests. These are included in the tariff but are entirely optional - in accordance with Sederkloof's informal atmosphere guests are free to decide their own activity levels.

The Baviaanskloof nights are themselves a wonder to behold with a starry sky so clear it seems to be within reach.

Sederkloof was mentioned in an article on the Baviaanskloof contained in the March 2005 edition of South Africa's Getaway magazine.

Below are some of the extracts:

"The illusion of paws was even more marked as my long-suffering Isuzu later hacked up a track along the muscular side of a berg in the company of Thys and Alice Cilliers, who own the beautiful Sederkloof Lodge."

"Thys had offered to get me deeper into the mountains and soon the Baviaans River was a tangled thread far below us."

"Valley thicket gave way to protea-sprinkled fynbos guarded by the proud but tatty aloe ferox sentinels."

"Up above Sederkloof Lodge the air was cool and clear, glittering in sunlight playing on rustling sprays of restios. The track ended at a cliff edge above a deep kloof, which wove its way tantalisingly into the distance."

"Deep in its embrace was a relic Cedar forest, secret and safe. Beyond, the far ranges smirked in their seemingly inaccessible isolation."

In the Getaway advisor Sederkloof Lodge received five umbrellas, indicating the highest level of accommodation:

"For luxury there is Sederkloof Lodge run by Thys and Alice Cilliers."

"It consists of stone-and-glass hideaways high on a ridge overlooking a kloof and includes a communal bar, lounge and pool. It is accessible by 4x4 only."

Many different sites adorned with bushman rock art testify to human habitation in the area spanning as much as 100 000 years. A famous South African writer, PH Nortje, spent his childhood on the farm and wrote most of his stories about the area.

Thys and Alice Cilliers visited the area in 2002 and fell in love with it straight away. They bought a farm of 2200 ha, drawn by its particular natural beauty, and built a lodge to share it with the world.

Noorspoort Guest Farm

The family describes the farm in their own words:

"Well, we are the Craven family, 5th generation on the homestead Noorspoort. Danie Craven - yes, the famous rugby guy - was married to Beyera Hayward in 1938. Their eldest son George now owns the family farm Noorspoort and his son Danie is the sixth generation on the farm. The farm was bought by GNJ Hayward in 1863, but here is more on the Hayward side of the family, as narrated by David Raymer, a family member".

NOORSPOORT - by David Raymer

The first recorded farmer at Noordse Poort was a GC Strydom in 1820.

In 1863 George Nathaniel John Hayward (1826-1890), third son of the 1820 Settler, James Hayward (1799-1882), bought the farms Noordse Poort of 994 morgen and de Poort from Marx for £1 000 (actual transfer took place in 1871 and T I Ferreira, F Gerds and J Mosel were listed as co-owners). John Hayward must have bought out his partners, over a period. The farm later became known as Noorspoort. The original farmhouse was built on the eastern side of the present homestead and was later used as a shed, but was demolished in about 1950. Later he bought De Poort, Oude Post and Kranskop.

John was instrumental in making an attempt to provide Steytlerville with water by constructing a furrow from a site where the Oudepost Loop enters the Groot River. When £60 had been spent (all the funds available), the project was abandoned. As late as 1911, traces of this venture were still visible. Over the entrance of one of the large outbuildings at Noorspoort is a stone on which he had inscribed; "1863 J Hayward".

In about 1878 John went to England to visit relatives. A painting that John did while overseas is still on display at Noorspoort. John became a wealthy farmer who left farms to all his children and built houses for his daughters in Steytlerville. He subdivided the properties Kranskop and de Poort into three sections of 900 morgen each for three of his daughters and called the centre property Chelmsford. John died in 1888 as a result of a kick from a horse. His wife, Dina, died in 1892 and both are buried at Noorspoort.

After his death in 1888, Noorspoort went to his only son, John James Hayward (1859-1937). John James built a stable for his horse and later added on to the building that was the start of the present homestead. In 1885 John James moved to Aberdeen district where he bought the farm, Oorlogspoort, but continued farming operations at Noorspoort. John James became a very successful farmer and established the Noorspoort irrigation lands. This scheme included a weir on the Groot River (constructed by a Mr. I Ferreira in 1890), a 5km long furrow and 80 morgen of lands. Part of the scheme was undertaken by a neighbour, a Mr. Walton.

In 1907, after his completion of his studies at Victoria College (Stellenbosch University), George Nathaniel Hayward (1886 - 1977), eldest son of John James, started farming at Noorspoort. George recorded that he had to pay £100 per year for the hire of 3 391 morgen and his father gave him 300 Angora goats. His father also arranged to have a wagon made for George on his homecoming. The wagon was built by one Andries Somers of Graaff-Reinet and made of stinkwood, ordered from Oudtshoorn. It weighed three tons and was railed from Graaff-Reinet to Baroe. This wagon was used for many years to cart wool and mohair until tractors replaced it. The wagon is now in the Steytlerville museum.

In 1914 the Noorspoort farmhouse was renovated and enlarged for George’s bride, Hannah. George’s father gave them a very large teak dining table and twelve matching chairs as a wedding present. This suite is now in the possession of George’s eldest grandson, George Craven. George made large improvements at Noorspoort, such as the homestead, the lands (120 morgen), outbuildings, staff houses and farming infrastructure. In October 1969, George had the remains of Mary Hayward, wife of the Settler and buried at Orange Grove under the Winterhoek mountains, re-interred in the family graveyard on Noorspoort, next to those of her son George Nathaniel John. George farmed until his death in 1977. George and his wife Hannah are both buried at Noorspoort. George’s eldest daughter, Beyera Craven inherited Noorspoort and her son, George Craven, commenced farming in 1977.

Many people that visit the farm comment: "I've never seen so many stars in my life!". People are awe-struck at the visibility of the Milky Way, many seeing it for the first time ever. Noorspoort’s distance from any big city, and the lack of pollution, makes it the ideal place to lie on your back and gaze away at the billions of stars...”

It is recommended that a lunar time-table is consulted before arrival, as visibility is optimised before moon-rise. A telescope has been installed and is available to the public. Noorspoort’s stargazing weekends have met tremendous success. Presented by Pine Pienaar, Louis Barendse from RSG and Dr. Francois du Toit, this is not to be missed.

There are conference facilities at Noorspoort. “Dok se Hok” offers full conference facilities, complete with overhead projector, computer hookup, big screen, DSTV, full music system and bar. Different, fun and rustic, Dok se Hok can handle up to fourty delegates. Full catering and accommodation are available.

“Lekker” (nice) activities at Noorspoort include sunset bush cruises by 4x4 Unimog, stargazing at the observatory, opskop en dop (dancing and refreshments), paintball games and springhaas jaag (catch and release of spring hares).
Noorspoort offers you a variety of accommodation options and facilities, from luxury to rustic.

Sewefontein Boerdery Trust

Sewefontein is a 1 355 hectare farm situated in the heart of the Baviaanskloof. The Sewefontein farm was bought in 2002 by a group of 75 local people from the Kloof, who clubbed their housing subsidies together to purchase the farm under a Trusteeship, the Sewefontein Gemeenskap Boerdery Trust. The owners are all farm dwellers who have grown up and worked on farms in the region all their lives. Buying their own land and securing their future was therefore a dream come true.

Potential:

Sewefontein has incredible potential, both natural and infrastructural. Situated right in the middle of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve, it is a developing national park with huge eco-tourist and conservation potential. It is 70km from Willowmore, the nearest urban centre along a decent unsurfaced road. The farm is situated almost in the middle of the kloof - making it accessible from both the coastal region and the Karoo. Being in the middle of the kloof makes it the ideal overnight stop for travellers and tourists;

As the name Sewefontein ('seven springs') describes, the farm has a number of natural springs that bubble out of the mountainside in addition to a borehole that constantly fountains out of the earth. Visitors can put their faces into the sweet waters and drink deeply;

The farm has many different indigenous tree types including a natural forest of ficus whose roots demonstrate their age and durability.

Vision of Sewefontein:

The vision of Sewefontein is for a sustainable community where the owners have a diversity of livelihood options including eco-tourism, food gardens and commercial agriculture.

Their future plans include:

A shop and restaurant for travellers or campers who wish to enjoy local cuisine;

The restoration of the PH Nortje house on the farm into a museum;

The establishment of a conservancy where the animals (including the indigenous mountain zebra) will roam free between the neighbouring farms;

Campsites with ablutions made in the traditional manner using local reeds and clay (both cool in the summer and warm in the winter);

Backpacker accommodation;

Hiking and possible 4X4 trails, including absailing in the breathtaking kloofs of the farm; and

Bed and breakfasts where you will stay with the local people and learn more of the culture and ways of the Baviaanskloof (these are available now). They will provide home grown food and, with time, crafts.

Challenges and opportunities:

“We are presently challenged by a cash shortfall to institute our dreams and visions. We are therefore charging a small fee to all visitors to our beautiful farm. As you enjoy and share the breathtaking scenery, taste the sweet natural water and wonder at the natural vegetation, we ask you to contribute to our community project. Thank you for your support, please tell others about us and encourage people to visit us. We will welcome you back to visit Sewefontein.”

OpenAfrica.org

<Point>
