In 1918 one of the first white families to settle in Hluhluwe were the Mares. Since then, four generations of Mares and Hassards have made this idyllic spot their home, finally establishing the Falaza Game Park in 1990. Many of the staff are descendants of the dedicated folk who have served the family since the early days. Highly personalised service is the hallmark here, and a visit to Falaza is an invitation to join the family for a unique African safari.

Falaza is tailored to accommodate small exclusive groups. It is easily accessible from the village of Hluhluwe and a three-hour drive from Durban. Falaza Game Park occupies 800ha rich in indigenous fauna and flora. Surrounded by spacious lawns (that are frequented by the resident rhino!), the camp shelters beneath a canopy of indigenous trees. After the day’s activities of the day, a dip in the pool or sipping sundowners are temptations few can resist.

Leisurely breakfasts in the dining room or a succulent meal around the boma fire are a gastronomic delight. Traditional South African cuisine is prepared by well-trained local chefs and is complemented by select wines from the cellar.

Falaza’s 5-star tented accommodation evokes memories of African Safaris of a bygone colonial era. En-suite tents are graciously appointed, with no compromise on comfort.
Falaza is conveniently located close to some of South Africa’s finest wildlife conservation areas, but is itself an amazing reserve, offering day or night drives with experienced rangers, guided walks and early morning horse trails in Falaza, leisurely boat cruises on the Mzinene River to spot crocodiles and hippos, as well as many species of birds. Other activities available in the region include deep-sea fishing, snorkelling, visiting traditional Zulu cultural villages and a visit to the local cheetah project.

Falaza also has a luxury health spa – just the place to connect with nature while rejuvenating mind, body and spirit. Combining up-to-date facilities with impeccable service, the spa is nestled among the indigenous bush – a peaceful, natural haven. Dedicated therapists are on hand to offer a full range of spa treatments – including advanced skin and body treatments, a wide range of massages (Swedish, aromatherapy, Kahuna), hydrotherapy, phytotherapy, hot-stone therapy and seaweed mud treatments.
Lalapanzi – The name:

Lalapanzi is a Zulu word. ‘Lala’ means ‘to sleep’ and ‘phanzi’ or ‘panzi’ means ‘at the bottom.’

When the first owners of the guesthouse had to accommodate their first foreign guests (December 1995), they needed five rooms, but they only had four. It had been an emergency booking by a travel agent and in December St Lucia is full! The travel agent begged the owners to make a plan as no accommodation could be found anywhere. The owners therefore vacated their own private bedroom and slept in the garage (at the bottom or ‘phanzi’ of the house) with the whole family who were visiting for the Christmas weekend. The staff promptly named the episode ‘Lalapanzi’ and the owners decided to rename the guesthouse as it was such a nice-sounding word!

The diverse lifestyle of the Duku-Duku people is an interesting one. In Khula Village today, traditional healing is very strongly believed in and sangomas and inyangas (healers and herbalists) are visited regularly. Most people are subsistence farmers, and the ever-growing population puts a strain on this way of life.

Fafa Tours and Craft offers guests the opportunity to accompany a Zulu guide in an open vehicle to meet the local Zulu people, consult a sangoma, experience day-to-day activities in the township (no commercialised acting), visit local schools and churches, and learn a bit of Zulu culture and history.

Guests can also learn more about spiritual healing with a sangoma, and discover the nightlife of the township at a local shebeen (tavern). Lunch, Zulu dancing and a visit to local curio stalls are other options.

Donations to schools and churches are appreciated, as are tips for dancers and guides. Remember to bring cameras and sunscreen. Money generated by the tours helps to support local schools.

Snippet of Zulu history:

The Zulus are a proud nation with a colourful past. The most well-known aspect of this is probably the reign of Shaka – the greatest warrior chief in Zulu history. During his reign, Shaka conquered most of KwaZulu-Natal – and while many recall his bravery and strength, he was also notable for his tyranny. Shaka devised and improved upon the close-contact stabbing spear (assegai), giving it a shorter handle and longer, broader blade – which contributed immensely to his success in various wars.

To provide quality spears for his warriors, Shaka and his chosen workers had to learn the art of metal work from the Portuguese in Mozambique. These metal workers were hidden in the Duku-Duku forests (near St Lucia), where their knowledge was kept a secret.
