Umngeni Lodge and Catering
Umngeni Bush Lodge is situated in Mdantsane, a township of the former Ciskei government, which was established in 1963. Mdantsane, also known as 'the home to boxing' is now the second largest township in South Africa. The people who reside in Mdantsane were removed either voluntarily or by force by the apartheid government of the National Party. The people were moved from the old East and West Bank Location, which were black areas in terms of the Group Areas Act of 1913.
Tourist attractions around Umngeni Lodge include the following:
- Mdantsane Highway Terminus: This is the central point where all people and traffic from all parts of the township converge;
- Mdantsane Sports Centre: One will note that East London is a leading producer of boxing legends. The Sports Centre was built to promote various sports codes. The centre is adjacent to the hotel and large enough to accommodate up to 10 000 fans;
- Informal Settlements;
- The legacy of apartheid has left many homeless people who have resorted to putting up their own informal housing structures; and
- Shebeen Tours
A shebeen is an entertainment facility for local people and visitors who enjoy outdoor life. Music, drinks and contemporary debates are enjoyed to the fullest at the various shebeens.
Facilities available at Umngeni Lodge are:
- A big lounge with DSTV and entertainment music set;
