Mbokodo Craft Centre
This project was initiated by a group of twenty black women from East London and the surrounding localities, who after seeing the demand for traditional wear, decided to form an organisation called Mbokodo Crafters. They specialise in the production of traditional garments for both men and women, using a combination of K-sheeting’s, German print and Hessian material, but also makes curtains and bedding. The material is then decorated with different sizes and colours of beads.
The group is a combination of disabled women, tecknikon students and local rural women who have no formal background but does understand the art of beadwork. They have been invited to various workshops, conferences, trade fairs and roadshows, not only in South Africa, but in various other countries.
