Mahokka Adventures

Mahokka Adventures has arranged a whole day itinerary for visitors to Spoegrivier (visitors can partake in the whole itinerary or simply choose the parts they would like to do):

  • Meet tourists at the advice office;
  • Move to the community hall where the history of Spoegrivier will be told;
  • Introduce the programme for the day;
  • Breakfast is served with the local singing group providing background entertainment (breakfast is the traditional baked livers, heart and kidneys with roosterbrood and tea or coffee);
  • Walk to the desalination plant and see how Spoegrivier gets its drinking water;
  • Walk through some natural veld and see interesting rock formations, learn the names of the plant species and their medicinal purposes. Experience a piece of the Succulent Karoo with knowledgeable guide Barney Links and other trained nature site guides;
  • Move to Mahokka and hear about its history;
  • Walk to Stofkraal;
  • Snack-lunch and rest while listening to more old stories from the town storytellers. (The snack lunch is a traditional hotdog – roosterbrood with boerewors (sausage) and tomato sauce;
  • Move to Rooiberg to see how the land is ploughed with donkeys, how goats are milked and some local artworks;
  • Have a traditional meal with traditional music in the background.  (The traditional meal is often sheep or goat meat with vegetables, and milk to drink.);
  • Transport back to Spoegrivier is via donkey cart;
  • The donkey cart rides must be organized two days in advance;
  • Please take note that the nearest Petrol Station is in Garies (and not in Spoegrivier) and also that the nearest clinic is in Kharmas; and
  • Jacobus is also busy setting up a hiking trail that will show the splendours of the flower season.

A day in and around Spoegrivier is truly a day of traditional culture.
