Braeside is a historic home built in the 1890’s by George Morris Sutton. It is set in an enormous garden with a spectacular view over the Umgeni Valley below the Howick Falls. Fish eagles call over the river, crowned eagles soar in the thermals above the gorge and small game animals enjoy the tranquillity of the garden and adjacent conservancy. Braeside Guesthouse could be in the middle of nowhere, yet it is only 1.5km from the centre of Howick. Visitors to the falls will see the house with its distinctive dormer windows peeping through the trees across the valley to the left.
Pia and Kech Sanchez host a guesthouse with a difference. They have brought a graceful old house back to life with a skilful mix of South American and African influences. Colour, texture and music blend to create a vibrant but relaxing atmosphere. English, Afrikaans, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Zulu are spoken at Braeside – ensuring that all will feel welcome. Braeside offers affordable, family friendly accommodation – either self-catering or bed with a continental breakfast. The accommodation options range from a thatched cottage to family rooms or single rooms. Dormitory-style rooms and camping can also be arranged – ideal for groups of people attending the local sporting events.
The veranda, Judge’s Den and garden are the perfect venue for small weddings and gatherings. Pia and Kech have hosted a number of small conferences and workshops. Braeside is definitely ideally situated for visitors wishing to explore the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It is within walking distance of Howick’s amenities, close to sporting venues and nature reserves, and is a paradise for bird-watchers and artists.
