The Kamiesberg Route:

The Kamiesberg Route is located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa and stretches from the west coast to the Kamiesberg mountain range east of the town Kamieskroon. The route is part of the greater Namaqualand region.

When hearing the word 'Namaqualand', those in the know tend to immediately think of wild flowers – carpets upon carpets of oranges, pinks, whites and yellows. This is one of South Africa's most famous natural spectacles, occurring in springtime after a winter of adequate rainfall. The Kamiesberg Route is situated in the centre of the Succulent Karoo Biodiversity Hotspot.

The area has so much more to offer - including fauna, landscapes, local customs, history and local cuisine. Few people know, for example, that here is one of the rare places where one can camp in matjieshutte (huts traditionally built by the Nama people) – alone in the silence of wide open spaces and surrounded by spectacular rock formations and quiver trees.

The Kamiesberg region is home to wonderful rock formations, fascinating plant life, amazing gorges, exciting mountain passes and some truly remarkable people who are close to the earth and will help visitors to discover the wonders of Namaqualand. Visitors can enjoy hiking, bird-watching, game drives, donkey cart rides, campfire stories and simply chatting with the locals, seeing local crafts, visiting the village vegetable garden, stopping to admire the variety of landscapes or feeling the sea breeze on one’s face are equally rewarding experiences – as is admiring the fascinating Succulent Karoo flora, whether there are flowers or not.

West Coast Route:

Travellers please note:

  • There is no fuel available on Hondeklip Bay and fuel is only available in Kleinzee and Koiingnaas from 5am - 8pm on weekdays and from 8am - 12pm on Saturdays.

  • Certain stretches of road may require access permits and it is therefore recommended that travellers enquire before visiting the area.

The West Coast Diamond Route, with its flowing dunes and mysterious shipwrecks is a rugged, nature experience along the unexplored north-west coast of South Africa's Northern Cape. These shores have remained virtually unknown to the public at large as it is within the restricted and previously forbidden diamond mining areas.

The route runs along the coast from Groenrivier mouth until Port Nolloth and is ideal if you are looking for peace, tranquillity and adventure. However many of the roads on the route are not accessible to ordinary cars and more suitable for 4x4. The delightful coastal village of Hondeklipbaai has a few guesthouses for those wishing for a little luxury.

It consists of a 20km loop on the Rooiberg Hiking Trail and a 10km trail alternative for runners who prefer a shorter distance as well as a 5km fun walk. The 20km race starts with a tough 12km ascent to the summit of the Northern Cape's highest peak the Rooiberg, followed by an 8km down the valley to the finish line. The finish line has cooling waters of the farm dam and some local food prepared by the ladies in the 'kookskerm' (food Kraal).
