Onverwacht Flora Accommodation is situated high up in the Riviersonderend Mountains - halfway between the twin villages of McGregor and Greyton.

Onverwacht offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. A two hour drive from Cape Town via Worcester and McGregor brings you to what is often described as 'The road to Nowhere'.  This nature lovers' paradise is situated at the start of the famous Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail. Onverwacht is surrounded by mountain streams, hiking trails, 4X4 routes, protea plantations and mountain bike routes.

The towns of Greyton, McGregor, Ashton, Bonnivale and Robertson are visible from the bungalows. The lights of the visible towns are a spectacular sight at night. The sunrise in the east is a breathtaking vision and a must for all early birds. The sunset in the west has the prettiest colours one can imagine.

All the bungalows are named after famous fynbos species - the pride of Onverwacht:

  • Blushing Bride (Stone cottage):  Sleeps two guests in a double bed;
  • Speldekussing (Annex):  Sleeps two guests;
  • Compacta (Annex):  Sleeps two guests;
  • Erica (Mountain cottage):  Sleeps eight guests;
  • Sewejaartjie (Mountain cottage):  Sleeps eight guests;
  • Repens (Mountain cottage):  Sleeps eight guests; and
  • Exemia (Mountain cottage):  Sleeps eight guests.

Onverwacht can accommodate 38 guests in total.

Facilities / Services:

  • All units are self-catering;
  • They all have an indoor shower and toilet;
  • All units are fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and cookware;
  • All units have a two plate gas stove, fridge and gas geysers;
  • No electricity: Oil lamps and candles are provided;
  • Guests must please bring their own bedlinnen and towels although each bed is always covered with a
  • sheet, comforter and cushions (linen and towels may be provided on request at an extra cost);
  • All units have their own private outside braai (barbeque) facilities; and inside fireplaces for the cooler evenings.

Tariffs:

  • R120 per person/night;
  • Children under 12:  R60.00 per person/night.

Firewood is available, but must please be ordered upon arrival. Bedding is available at R60.00 for a double and R40.00 per person for a single bed.  Meals may be ordered on request - please arrange this with the hostess upon arrival. Groceries for hikers can be purchased by the hostess upon arrival. The cost is 15% of the total value of the groceries purchased. Please arrange this upon arrival.

Activities:

  • Mountain biking:  Bikers can challenge themselves on these roads with a variety of options to choose from;
  • Private hiking trails:  There are many trails such as the private Leopards Trail: which we offer our selves on our land starts and ends at Eagle’s Nest Guesthouse (on our land and lasts approximately three hours. A real treat for any nature lover with a view and rock pools of its own! If you intend of making use of this route, you will have to inform us beforehand;
  • Swimming pool and refreshing natural pools:  The amazing 'Bobbejaankop'-waterhole is situated only 1km from the bungalows;
  • Picnics:  Picnics at the pools are very popular - one can easily spend the whole day just relaxing;
  • Viewpoints:  There are simply too many to mention!!! 
  • Birdlife:  Onverwacht boasts some spectacular birdlife - these include suikerbekkies, eagles, crows, sunbirds and owls;
  • Animals:  These include klipspringer, grysbok and duikers. (Please do not frighten or chase the animals as some are very tame);
  • Fynbos:  Fynbos species at Onverwacht include Erica, speldekussing, leucodendron, repens and compacta.  The fynbos changes with the seasons - this is the pride of Onverwacht!!!
  • Waterkloof 4X4 Trail Route and Hiking Trail:  This is perfect spot to enjoy mountain biking a picnic, fishing or swimming in the river pools. The route starts approximately 2km on the main road below the bungalows and travels towards the valley/kloof approximately 2km downwards. Your hosts will be more than happy to show guests a few private 4X4 trails.  Some of these are quite challenging.

Eagle's Nest Guesthouse:

The name Eagle's Nest is perfectly chosen for this spectacular double story stone guesthouse, nestled between the twin villages of Greyton and McGregor in the heart of the Riviersonderend Mountains. This is where the famous Boesmanskloof/Die Galg Hiking Trail ends from Greyton's side and also starts on the McGregor side.

The famous Boesmanskloof/The Galg Trail is literally at the front door of this stone house and all hikers of this trail pass by its presence on the trail.

Rooms:

This self-catering guesthouse offers four double bed bedrooms each with an en-suite bathroom (shower and toilet).  Every room is named after an African eagle and equipped with linen and towels. The bedrooms are on the upper level of the guesthouse and offer a balcony with breathtaking views over the gorge. A separate bedroom downstairs has three single beds also with en-suite (shower and toilet).

Open plan Lounge/Dining Room:

Upon entering Eagle's Nest, your eyes are drawn to the glass sliding door which leads to the patio. This unlocks an amazing view on the Riviersonderend mountains and the natural rushing rock pools. A 12-seater dining table ensures long hours of socializing. Coaches and a wonderful interior braai (barbeque) ensures that when the mountain evenings turn cooler, you will be cosily cared for in the Eagles Nest.

Kitchen:

A big family kitchen with a wooden table ensures a warmth that will make you feel right at home. It is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and other cookware, as well as a fridge, microwave, stove and a toaster and of course the necessary electricity.
